Meeting of the London Polymer Clay Group

29 November 2009

Report and photos by Carol Blackburn

Our  November 29th clay day was held in a smaller room at the London Bubble Theatre as our usual room upstairs was being used for panto rehearsals.  Although it was so near to Christmas 12 people took time away from doing their Christmas shopping to join us.  We had a festive theme for each of our demos and had a guest visitor, Mr Robin Elsey, who has been working with polymer clay and metallic foils.

Sue Margetts made the journey from Manchester to join us again.  A warm welcome to our newest member, Julie Pankhurst.   Julie has only been working with polymer clay for a few weeks but see how quickly she is progressing!

The 'show and tell' table was full with a variety of Christmas themed creations and several people had brought their new name tags made at the previous clay day in September.

Susan Rimmer kicked off the day with a demo on decorating Christmas tree baubles.  She had bought inexpensive glass baubles and decorated them with snakes of polymer clay giving these simple baubles a chic new look.

Robin Elsey discussed the difficulty of applying metallic graphic decorations onto spherical and more generally curved surfaces. He has been experimenting with this complex problem, using Caslon's Foilex, a product that is virtually identical to Lisa Pavelka's foils. After a tea break I demo'ed making Christmas tree stars with mica polymer clay using rubber stamps and mica shift techniques.

In the afternoon Clare Mcknight showed us how she made a translucent polymer clay stained glass window for her nativity scene wall plaque.  She began by making lots of bull's eye canes which she formed into a kaleidoscope cane.

Everyone helped with clearing up (a big thank you) and started leaving at around 4.30pm.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the next clay day in Rotherhithe, south London -  Sunday 28th March.  Please contact me for more details.

Till then, have fun claying.
